At the core of our space, we want mothers to feel safe, known, encouraged, and loved. We do this through a varied collection of vulnerable, honest stories.
From September to May, we publish essays three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We publish on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July, and do not publish at all during our company-wide sabbatical in August.
We open for guest submissions twice per year, typically once in the spring and once in the fall. Our next submission window is January 10-17, 2021.
We charge a small reading fee to cover the cost of using Submittable. Patrons and Exhale members never pay to submit, and Exhale members also receive access to two additional (private) submission windows.
We are searching for diverse, artistic, subtle portrayals of motherhood to use on our Coffee + Crumbs website and Instagram feed in 2021. Please view our inspiration board to see the types of images we are looking for.
When we say subtle, we mean both exquisite and understated. We love blur, we love movement, we love hands holding. We love shadows and silhouettes. We are not looking for direct photos of faces. We are looking for images that captivate us and intrigue us. We love photos that stand as works of art, and photos full of mystery. We love photos that make us feel something.
Ultimately, we are in search of photography that compliments the stories we tell about motherhood—with a lived-in feeling as if you’ve stepped right into the moment you’re observing.
Format: We require all images to be high resolution, and at least 1000 pixels wide. We accept both film and digital images.
Editing style: We prefer edits to be as natural as possible. We try to stay away from heavy filters with saturated tones. We aren’t afraid of a little grain. Please keep your edits relatively light, natural, and use corrections that only further enhance what’s been originally captured.
Types of photos we’re looking for (please view the Pinterest board for more ideas!):
- Pregnant bellies
- Black and white images
- Mother holding child
- Kids being kids
- Rocking chair
- Baby items
- Kitchen, dishes
- Any still life photos that capture ordinary motherhood
At this time, we do not offer compensation for photography, but will be happy to provide full credit with a link back to your website on our blog, and appropriate credit and tags on Instagram should we use your image there.
